The event area for theIGSA World Championshipwas built in 1913 by Sam Hill the founder of MaryhillMuseum of Art, the 3.6 mile-long historic Loops Road, the first paved road in Pacific Northwest, winds through the Klickitat Hills just north of the StonehengeMonument near the junction of Washington Scenic Route 14 and U.S. Highway 97. The road was completely refurbished in 1998 and is open daily from 7 am to dusk for bicyclists and pedestrians.Sam Hill founded the WashingtonState Good Roads Association in 1899 and as its president represented the state of Washington at the first International Road Congress in Paris in 1908. He also established a chair of highway engineering, the first in the nation, at the University of Washington in 1907. The Historic Loops Road is a great place to experience his vision and era. Seven types of experimental road construction were employed to build Loops Road, including liquid asphalt shipped from California. An extensive collection of Samuel Hill's road related memorabilia is on permanent display within the MaryhillMuseum.
MaryhillMuseum of Art seeks to enrich the lives of Pacific Northwest residents and visitors by providing public access to the Museum's influential history and broad spectrum of artistic expression. This is accomplished through growth and stewardship of the Museum's unique collections, cultural and natural resources, and presentation of quality exhibitions and educational programs.
Built by Sam Hill as a tribute to the soldiers of KlickitatCounty who lost their lives, Maryhill's Stonehenge is the first monument in our nation to honor the dead of World War I. The structure is a full-scale replica of England's famous Neolithic Stonehenge. A Quaker pacifist, Hill was mistakenly informed that the original Stonehenge had been used as a sacrificial site, and thus constructed the replica to remind us that ''humanity is still being sacrificed to the god of war.'' The location now also includes monuments to the soldiers of KlickitatCounty who died in World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam.
The monument lies at the original Maryhill town site, four miles east of the museum, just off Washington Scenic Route 14. Hill's own crypt is a short walk southwest of Stonehenge on a bluff overlooking the Columbia River.

Fishing the Columbia Gorge
KlickitatCounty offers some of the finest freshwater fishing in the lower 48 states. It is truly a fisherman's paradise with lots of opportunity for family fishing. Its rivers are renowned for bragging' size 40 lb plus Chinook, as well as Coho salmon and river run steelhead. Anglers will also find Columbia River sturgeon that reach 14 feet and weights in excess of 500 lbs as well as trophy walleye, bass, trout, catfish, and abundant pan fish.
The Columbia River runs along the entire southern length of KlickitatCounty and boasts some of the best sturgeon fishing holes in the river. The Columbia is also home to largemouth and small mouth bass and trophy walleye, not to mention runs of steelhead, salmon, and shad. Salmon and steelhead are caught in numbers both off the mouth and within the White Salmon and KlickitatRivers.
Numerous ponds and lakes throughout the county, especially those created fromthe construction of Bonneville, The Dalles and John Day dams, hold populations of bass, trout, catfish and other species of fish. These provide easy-access shore angling for young and old alike.

The Euro GP was created in 1998. From a faint trail beat into the tall grass, the Euro GP has become the premier Grand Prix track in the Northwest. Unlike any other facility, Eddieville was designed as a Grand Prix course first, and a motocross portion was developed later. This gives a flexibility not found elsewhere. The course can be run both directions and large portions are visible from the pit/viewing area The course is 6 ¼ miles long, with a 1 ¼ mile MX track within it. Unlike most Grand Prix tracks, the narliest parts of the track are out on the GP portion, not the MX track! With natural whoop sections, steep canyons, and the wide sweeping turns in the grassy fields, the Euro GP is unlike any other event. The 200 yard man-made whoop section in pit row, as well as the MX tracks' whoops, jumps, table-tops and off-camber corners , add to the diversity. With a average track width approaching 30', there are ample opportunities to pass. We have had over 150 riders on the course at one time and have yet to hear a gripe of congestion or no passing room. The Euro GP is basically a 6 ¼ mile giant natural MX track. There are no doubles or triples, but there are many opportunities for air if you want to fly!
AND LOAM!… REAL LOAM!…You've heard of it, now you can experience what racing on real, deep loam is actually like! There is a difference between riding on loam or riding on diced up, choppy, hard pan clay. All the field sections and most of the MX track are deep loamy soils with hardly a rock present. Located east of the Cascades, the average rainfall of 16 inches, is less than half of Washougal MX track. This means we have more days of mud-free riding. We start riding earlier in the spring and ride later in the fall. With watering equipment, we can extend our spring season and start out earlier in the fall.
